PDMT
The Paradigm Developmental Model of Treatment
Nevertheless, the PDMT serves a useful treatment purpose, providing an evidenced- based cognitive-behavioral framework for counselors/therapists to discuss the developmental tasks of recovery with their clients, without focusing on the spiritual aspects. I believe that perspective is better left to A.A., clergy, and other faith-based entities. PDMT is an inclusive approach and works well with A.A., SMART Recovery, and other self-help support groups.
The Paradigm Developmental Model Of Treatment is straightforward. As an individual grows in recovery and self understanding, their thinking changes. We call these changes Paradigm Shifts.
There are four shifts we have identified:
PROBLEM RECOGNITION – PARADIGM 1
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY – PARADIGM 2
SELF-REGULATION – PARADIGM 3
TRANSFORMATION – PARADIGM 4
Within each shift are paradigm themes. Collectively, these themes can be considered a design for living because as each theme unfolds, we understand more about ourselves and make healthy adjustments and choices based on our new set of priorities, intentions, and commitments. The PDMT model is designed to help individuals consider issues that will impact their ability to either successfully moderate their use or get clean and sober, regardless of which support group or method they utilize.
The PDMT cognitive- behavioral themes are:
PARADIGM 1
Problem-Recognition
Looking Beyond Self
Letting Go
PARADIGM 2
Self-Examination
Taking Responsibility
Willingness/Preparation
Action to Change
Accountability/Empathy
PARADIGM 3
Forgiveness and Accepting Consequences
Self-Regulation
Mindfulness
PARADIGM 4
Transformation
Each month on this website we will focus on a theme and discuss its relevance to supporting sobriety or moderation, and useful tools and techniques others have found helpful.
