Hello, let me introduce myself. I have been a therapist for over forty years and have specialized in two areas of treatment: substance abuse/addiction treatment and conflict management. I have met many remarkable people and I have been privileged to assist them in their journey of recovery. As I prepare for retirement it occurred to me that I have the knowledge shared by my clients that could be of value to others. Over the years I have passed this wisdom from one client to the next. I have come to call this knowledge “collective wisdom,” an assortment of insights, tips, and practical advice that many have found useful in their own journey of recovery. This website is my attempt, along with the book ``Paradigm Change: The Collective Wisdom Of Recovery,`` to pass on this information to a larger circle of people who might benefit from this collective wisdom.

The Paradigm Developmental Model of Treatment

In 2007 I co-wrote the book “Paradigm Developmental Model Of Treatment (PDMT).” This was soon followed by my book “Paradigm Developmental Model Of Treatment Group Topics.” These books are for treatment professionals and outline a treatment approach I developed called “The Paradigm Developmental Model Of Treatment.” This approach provides a cognitive-behavioral method of treatment and a secular interpretation of the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). Let me be clear, this model is not intended to replace the traditional twelve steps. I respect the A.A. program immensely and have first-hand knowledge of it’s many success stories.

Nevertheless, the PDMT serves a useful treatment purpose, providing an evidenced- based cognitive-behavioral framework for counselors/therapists to discuss the developmental tasks of recovery with their clients, without focusing on the spiritual aspects. I believe that perspective is better left to A.A., clergy, and other faith-based entities. PDMT is an inclusive approach and works well with A.A., SMART Recovery, and other self-help support groups.

The Paradigm Developmental Model Of Treatment is straightforward. As an individual grows in recovery and self understanding, their thinking changes. We call these changes Paradigm Shifts.

There are four shifts we have identified:
PROBLEM RECOGNITION – PARADIGM 1
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY – PARADIGM 2
SELF-REGULATION – PARADIGM 3
TRANSFORMATION – PARADIGM 4

Within each shift are paradigm themes. Collectively, these themes can be considered a design for living because as each theme unfolds, we understand more about ourselves and make healthy adjustments and choices based on our new set of priorities, intentions, and commitments. The PDMT model is designed to help individuals consider issues that will impact their ability to either successfully moderate their use or get clean and sober, regardless of which support group or method they utilize.

The PDMT cognitive- behavioral themes are:

PARADIGM 1
Problem-Recognition
Looking Beyond Self
Letting Go

PARADIGM 2
Self-Examination
Taking Responsibility
Willingness/Preparation
Action to Change
Accountability/Empathy

PARADIGM 3
Forgiveness and Accepting Consequences
Self-Regulation
Mindfulness

PARADIGM 4
Transformation

Each month on this website we will focus on a theme and discuss its relevance to supporting sobriety or moderation, and useful tools and techniques others have found helpful.
